The Stubborn Farmer

I really hate the harvest goddess. All she ever does is pop up at the start of a game, and either A: Do something moronic to cause trouble or B: Explains how she did something moronic that caused trouble. Then, because she is too damn lazy, she tells you to hurry the hell up and fix it, then disappears. She is a damn GODDESS, she can fix this crap with the snap of a finger!! But, NO… she is too GD lazy, or busy doing fuck all of nothing to clean up her own messes!

“It’s probably because she doubts a farmer’s ability to care for the land that was passed onto them.”

“Look, I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m just tired of being looked down on, when I doubt anyone else could do much better.” He crossed her arms and approached Opal. “And aren’t you a bit old to pretend to be princess with your friends?”

Opal stared at him. “But Opal doesn’t look down on you! If anything Opal looks up to you! LITERALLY!” Opal looked back at the farm. “Opal thinks your doing all you can and with maybe some extra funds and motivation you can do even better. Opal is sure you’re a great person!” Opal gasped when he said pretend. “Opal doesn’t pretend! Opal certainly isn’t a princess- but Oneechama is!!” she huffed, her face red. Opal would never just say her friends were princesses unless it were a compliment! Frey really is princess of Selfia!

“Idiot,” muttered Russell as he put his hands on the girl’s shoulders and turned her around. He began to walk her towards the edge of his property. “I don’t need your funds, or more motivation. Take a look in town. No amount of money will bring people back to this place.”

He crossed his arms again and looked at Opal. “I appreciate the thought, but I work alone.”

Opal eyes were wide as she was pushed back to the edge of the farm. She looked over her shoulder at Russel. “B-but… Bring people back… happens all the time in places just like this. Opal can tell your trying really hard…” Opal sighed. She remembered stories of a goddess. “Hey… this is a land where they believe in the Harvest Goddess, right?” Being a younger farmer, Opal also was fond of fairy tales and myths. But they’re not myths. “Do you know? Opal hear’s stories about places far away where miracles happen! And they have great farmers and a pretty goddess! You’re a great farmer, right, mister?!! Are you a believer?!!!” Opal’s cheeks were bright pink with excitement, and her silver pigtails bounced with every word.

“Yes, but not in the way people accept,” he said. “If the Goddess wants us to farm, she better let us do it without having to worry about her doing something stupid.” He grumbled. “Like creating a tree that somehow is the source of fertile soil.”

“Well,” Opal said dreamily. “In fairy tails, she protects the tree, right? And it’s not just a fairy tail, right? She really exist, doesn’t she? It sounds like you’ve met her. Do you know a lot about her? She… didn’t just create the tree? It might not be here fault. There’s a Harvest King, too, you know.” Opal thought about this for a moment. “Where Opal’s from, there isn’t a Harvest Goddess, but there are stories and everything. There are also churches and God… If the tree is the source of all naturally fertile soil, can’t you just use fertilizer so you can fertilize it yourself?”

“That’s my problem with the Harvest Goddess,” he grumbled. “And I’ve never heard of this King, so he probably has the right idea of things: Let us take care of the land.” He turned to his fields, when she asked if he could fetilize the land himself and he sighed, shaking his head. “Why do you think I’m almost at subsistance living? I tried, and it just failed.”

He crossed his arms, and thought to himself, not letting his face give any hint as to what his thoughts were.

“I doubt it myself,” he said. “It’s all I have to go on, really. The city folk don’t care what happens to my town and will gladly swallow it up along with my farm.”

“Mm…” She looked out to the horses, watching them walk around and frolick with the other horses. It was either find this only thing he was having hope for or leaving the town. Either way, it was a tough decision to make. “Well, good luck then. Sorry I don’t have any information though.”

“That’s fine,” he said, looking at the horses. “How did you get your horses to like you?” He looked at her and then back to the horses. “A couple years ago, when Crossbell was pretty well off, the ranch gave me a foal to help raise and would let me keep it if it liked me. I brushed it, talked to it, and took care of it and yet it never liked me enough to ride it, when it finally was big enough.”

“You wouldn’t happen to know anything about a Goddess Tree, would you?” he asked. “Someone told me that’s why all the soil has gone bad. Frankly, I still think it’s the city being not too far off from my town.”

The blonde narrowed her eyes at him. The Goddess Tree? What…

“I doubt it myself,” he said. “It’s all I have to go on, really. The city folk don’t care what happens to my town and will gladly swallow it up along with my farm.”

otsuki-and-friends replied to your post: Opal wandered around this unfamiliar land. Somehow, she had wandered outside the Selfia Kingdom, and now she was here. She noticed a farm ahead. Eager, she ran up to it to see what it was a saw it was a small ranch that was starting to run down….

“Eh? >▽< That’s cool! Opal has a little bitty farm in Selfia like Frey-oneechama!” Opal twisted and turned and jumped up and down like the child she was. “Oh, and Opal must’ve gotten lost. I’m sorry if I bothered you… Umm…” She looked over to the plot where crops were dying. “Do you, like, need help, sir? Mama would know how to fix this place right up! It’s okay, I had trouble too ‘till I met Oneechama.”

“I’m not having trouble!” snapped Russell. “And I don’t need your help. I got things under control.” He said as he brought his hoe down once more. He did not like outsiders wanting to help him. Especially the way this one put it. He was not stupid or new to the business.

“Eek!” Opal was startled. She sniffed and could feel her throat well up and her face grow red. “Well… okay.” she sighed. Her eyes were watery. “Opal doesn’t want to be trouble. But Opal doesn’t know where she is and got separated from Oneechama…” … In an unfamiliar area with no one she knew, is all that she can do is wander? She sniffed and rubbed her eyes, facing away from Russel with he head towards the ground. “Oneechama… has a wonderful farm and is a wonderful princess… She saved me when I could barely afford to feed Opal and her animals. Before Frey-oneechama, Opal’s only friends were the animals and a wooly plushie…” Waitwait- why was she saying all of this?

Opal noticed a man looking at her like she was weird.

She walked over to the man and realized how short she was in comparison. “Hey, mister, is this your farm?”

“Yeah,” said Russell as he tilled the last bit of soil of the day. In the summer heat, he had his jacket tied around his waist by the sleeves and some of his hair stuck to his brow. “What are you doing on it?”

“This is a sick joke, right?”
